Even if for some Agile and Scrum practitioners, checklists can have the bad reputations as being on the wrong side of the “Individuals and interactions over processes and tool ” Agile Manifesto preferred values, it doesn’t always mean that it contains “items you should always check”. They can be also considered as a good practice that allows to capitalize and share experience when they are used as guidelines to assess the different aspects of a situation. This article presents various websites, articles and blog posts that suggest checklists for ScrumMasters. The main reference is scrummasterchecklist.org and many websites just reference this content.
If the development of open source Scrum tools was in vogue some years ago, a lot of these projects have now been abandoned. Some are still active, but this is because their development is sponsored by a commercial hosted option. There is however an alternative to manage your Agile software development projects if you have a low budget… and a small team. Some providers of commercial Scrum tools provide a free version of their software, often with some limitations. Only Scrum tools that offer a long term free commercial product features are mentioned in this article, not the tools that have only a time-limited trial version. We also dot not include companies that claim to offer Scrum tools… with an interactive Gantt chart ;O) Free Scrum tools often come with some limitation, which are mainly the number of users or the number of projects that you can manage with the tools and naturally the support you can get. If you are however a small Agile team, mainly less than five developers, focused on the development of a single product, these limitations about the team or the product will not harm your Agile software development project. Be careful however in how much you invest in a “free” tool as we have noticed in our previous update (September 2018) the disappearance of many offers and a general trend toward limiting the number of users from the remaining vendors. This evolution continues (March 2019) as we have removed vendors that don’t offer free [...]

The business world is often dominated by extroverted personalities, but that doesn’t mean introverted leaders can’t be incredibly effective and impactful. As a ScrumMaster, being introverted actually comes with a plethora of advantages. While it can be challenging to lead a Scrum team when you’re not naturally outgoing, these tips can help you become the leader your team wants to follow! Consider the Perks of Introverted Leadership If you’re like most other introverts, you’re a great listener. That also happens to be one of the biggest advantages when it comes to your leadership pursuits! You’re not constantly focused on talking or being the center of attention, which means you’re more likely to pay attention to others and take in all they have to say. This can help you make better decisions and build stronger relationships with your Agile team members. Keep in mind that introverts are often great at thinking things through before acting. Extroverted leaders may be more impulsive, but introverts tend to take a step back and analyze the situation first. Over time, this can lead to better outcomes because you’re less likely to jump into something without considering all the angles. Manage Projects Effectively Managing projects – particularly those that involve a lot of communication and collaboration — can be an obstacle for introverted leaders. But there are ways to make it work. One key is to schedule regular one-on-one check-ins with your team members to ensure everyone stays on the same page. It’s also critical to [...]

CSM, PMI-ACP, PSM. Some people wear their certifications like badges of honor. In this article, Mark Haynes describes, with a facetious bias, some of the negative sides of Agile certifications. Author: Mark Haynes, https://dmarkhaynesconsulting.godaddysites.com/ Instead of practicing a few Scrum Master marketable skills, or figuring out how to apply Earned Value to User Stories (please don’t), you have decided to follow the new career paradigm and feed the Certification beast. Before getting on that train, and spending all that money, you should consider all sides of certifications. Is it simply a good career move, or is it a cult industry preying on human weakness? On one shoulder is an angel, speaking in platitudes and pontificating about its virtues. On the other is a devil, whispering all those de-motivational things you don’t want to hear. Or is that the other way around? Why do you want to get certified? It is not that certifications are bad. It is just that they can never be a panacea for lack of knowledge and experience. If you are on an agile train wreck and your first thought is “If only I had an agile certification?” then you have a much bigger problem than you suppose. But who knows, maybe getting a few certifications will help convince people you know what you are talking about. Let’s consider a few reasons for getting certified. There may be others but these are the ones I wish to satirize.
Scrum is a framework for project management used to organize and work on a project to make it have effective results. It is a set of tools and resources used to get the best out of a project. Scrum is one of the most widely-used project management frameworks, as it encourages focus and productivity. It also encourages transparency between the management, team members, and clients. The increased use of scrum has also increased the demand for professionals handling the framework. This is where the scrum masters come in. A scrum master ensures a great working relationship and guides others to understand scrum principles, values, and practices. They use this to help the team streamline their work and achieve their goals. Anyone interested in the career can start by being a junior scrum master and then proceed to become a senior scrum master. There are not many differences between junior and senior scrum masters. But senior scrum managers are more experienced than their junior counterparts, making it easier for them to negotiate a higher salary. They can earn between $55,000 to $170,000, with $107,000 being the average. Even though scrum master jobs are required in many organizations, driving up the demand for professionals in the area, it is difficult to get a job. Hence, we have teamed up with experts from job aggregator Jooble to discuss what it takes to become a junior scrum master. We will also give some tips to get employed and do well on the job.
ScrumMasters are accountable for increasing visibility and tackling organizational obstacles, while creating an Agile environment in which team members thrive. Quiet firing may represent the mother of all organizational impediments. Author: Giora Morein, ThinkLouder, https://thinklouder.com/ Quiet firing is when employers deliberately create an inhospitable working environment so that underperforming employees will decide to quit. While quiet quitting gained new momentum during the pandemic, quiet firing was still there, in stealth mode, slowly but surely pushing employees towards the door and showing them the way out. What is Quiet Firing? Quiet firing tactics often involve making a person’s job “unpleasant and unrewarding in order to get them to leave on his or her own terms,” according to Leslie Tarnacki, senior vice president of human resources at Workforce Software. The tactics may vary (from minimal pay raises, responsibilities being delegated to others, stagnant work roles, negative feedback, and more) but the result is the same. People feel demotivated, excluded, discriminated against, overlooked, and side-lined. Quiet firing isn’t new. It’s been around for some time. CNBC cites a LinkedIn poll of 20,000 respondents which revealed that a whopping 83% of workers have seen or experienced quiet firing. Here’s the thing: quiet firing can’t stay under the radar for long. It points to organizational and managerial failures that ultimately lead to a toxic culture – and may result in quiet quitting. At the organizational level, there’s an attempt to edge people out – to make their working lives so uncomfortable that they leave of their own accord. [...]

If we have always to remember that it is more important to be Agile than to do Agile, there are still many organizations practicing Scrum in a “cargo cult” mode. In this article, Mark Haynes describes, with a facetious bias, some of the common anti-patterns of Scrum Masters. Author: Mark Haynes, https://dmarkhaynesconsulting.godaddysites.com/ So first let me say that this isn’t about you. I know you’re on the true and righteous path of agility. You are a true disciple of Scrum. This is about all those other reprobates. Since they probably won’t listen to good advice? How about some bad advice? You know you’re going to do it anyway. Anti-pattern 1: I am the King of Scrum Ignore your security and become a martyr to the holy cause of agility. Complain loudly, vigorously, and as often as possible to your management that they are doing Scrum incorrectly. Management will eventually appreciate and reward you for your efforts, especially if you do this publicly. Get management to contritely retract a decision and admit their failures. Don’t worry about the cost, or how much time it consumed. Maybe that didn’t work out so well. Sheesh, what did you expect from that frigging neanderthal who hired you? Just focus on your team and make them do it the right way, regardless of published policies or management dictates. OK, so a few team members objected, because the little toadies toed the party line, especially after that public announcement by the VP on corporate policy.
The ScrumMaster role is certainly the most original addition of Scrum to the concept of software development teams. How and how much the ScrumMaster should be involved with the teams is a topic for debates in the Agile community. Isn’t the Scrum team supposed to be self-organized in the first place? In this article, Zuzi Šochová, author of The Great ScrumMaster, shares her opinion on some of the common mistakes made by ScrumMasters. Author: Zuzana “Zuzi” Šochová, http://sochova.cz/ Being great ScrumMaster is a journey, where you have to learn a lot about Agile, Scrum, coaching, facilitation, change, business agility, technical practices, leadership… But all over it all starts with having the agile mindset. This time, I’m not focusing on who you need to be, but quite opposite what you should avoid, as one of the very common questions at the classes is what are the most common mistakes of ScrumMaster. So here is the list: Being a Team Assistant Taking care of the team, solve issues (impediments) for them, plan meetings… It’s easy to get there as it seems to be helpful. But only in the short term. Long-term, it will create unconfident people who rely on ScrumMaster and never take over responsibility and ownership. Instead, you shall show them they can solve most of their problems by themselves, and be a good coach, facilitator and servant leader. Share ScrumMaster Role with Another Role Such ScrumMasters have usually lack of focus. They don’t spend enough time observing, finding better ways [...]
