A test management plugin for Jira will add to Jira the testing capabilities that project management tool does not provide natively. The core features of the test management Jira plugins should be to create test plans and test cases, organize them into test cycles, execute them, maintain traceability with Jira issues and provide test execution reports. Jira alone has no software testing features. It does not provide test case entity, no execution history, and no coverage reporting. The test management plugins add these features, providing a ready-to-use test management structure and reducing manual work. They help Agile teams avoid creating confusion in Jira with custom issue types or maintaining external synchronization with software tests plans and execution results. The most important features that you should look for in Jira Test Management plugins are: • Centralized test case repository: a dedicated place to create, organize, and maintain test cases instead of forcing them into Jira issue types. • Tracking test execution: the ability to run tests, record pass/fail results, and maintain execution history across cycles or releases. • Traceability to Jira issues: you should be able to link test cases and executions to user stories, epics, and defects for end‑to‑end coverage. • Organizing test cycles and test plans: group tests into cycles for sprints, releases, or regression suites. • Test reporting & dashboards: coverage reports, execution summaries, traceability matrices, and release readiness indicators. • Native Jira experience: tests should appear inside Jira UI and workflows, minimizing context switching for teams already [...]

Many Scrum teams are based on a distributed organization where members are in different locations, countries or time zones. How could these Agile teams perform their retrospectives? Some companies have developed online tools that can be used to facilitate retrospectives for distributed Scrum teams that work remotely. This article presents only online commercial tools that can be used to facilitate Agile retrospectives, as we have already produced a list of free retrospective tools for distributed Scrum teams. We mention only tools that have features specifically dedicated to Scrum retrospectives. If you want to add a tool that fits these requirements to this article, just let us now using the contact form.
The first thing to say is that the term “Planning Poker®” is a registered trademark of Mountain Goat Software, the Mike Cohn company. This is why this agile planning practice could be sometimes names differently: scrum poker, agile poker, etc. This article presents a list of free and open source planning poker tools and plugins that are also directly available as online tools. Planning poker is originally a card game used by Scrum teams to estimate effort or relative size of user stories or features when during sprint planning. Team members estimates by playing numbered cards face-down to the table. Then the cards are revealed and the estimates are discussed. Discussion is the main interest of playing planning poker, because some developers will share why they vote differently from the consensus. This can be done with paper cards if the team is collocated, but in the case of a distributed Scrum team, you need to use a software to do it. Using a tool also makes it easier to record and remind previous planning estimations. There are many open source implementations of the Agile planning poker practice. I have decided to present only those who have also an online website or that are built as a plugin for another application like Slack, Jira, Trello, Discord or the Azure Boards. If a good tool is missing from this list, do not hesitate to contact us, and we will add it in a future update. You will find in this article only online Scrum retrospective tools that are supposed to be used for free in the long term. We do not list tools that offer only a free trial based on duration or the number of retrospectives. We will also only mention the tools that have features specifically dedicated to Agile and Scrum retrospectives. There are many other tools that Scrum teams might use, from video conferencing platforms to online whiteboard software. Mentioning all these tools will result more in a book than an article.
Developed by Atlassian, Jira is a commercial issue tracking tool that allows bug tracking and Agile project management. It is one of the most-widely used tool by Scrum teams working in corporate Agile software development environments. Jira has an open architecture and its features are extended by plugins and add-ons created by third party organizations. A plugin (also known as add-on) is a bundle of code, resources and configuration files that can be dropped into an Atlassian product to add new functionality or change the behavior of existing features. It might add a single feature, like a report, or it might provide enough features to constitute a product in its own right. This article presents some open source Jira plugins, add-ons and utilities that can be found on GitHub. Updates February 4 2026 * Added Atlassian Python API wrapper, JiraTUI, MCP Atlassian October 10 2024 * Added: JiraPS, Terjira, GitHub For Jira * Atlassian Python API wrapper The atlassian-python-api library provides a simple and convenient way to interact with Atlassian products (such as Jira Service management, Jira Software, Confluence, Bitbucket and apps Insight, X-Ray) using Python. It is based on the official REST APIs of these products, as well as additional private methods and protocols (such as xml+rpc and raw HTTP requests). This library can be used to automate tasks, integrate with other tools and systems, and build custom applications that interact with Atlassian products. It supports a wide range of Atlassian products, including Jira, Confluence, Bitbucket, StatusPage and others, and [...]

There are still many open source kanban tools available, contrary to open source projects for Scrum tools that have mostly ended being transformed in a limited offer that supports a main commercial product. The simplicity of the Kanban approach has allowed open source software developers to create and maintain Kanban tools based on various platforms. This article lists pure Kanban open source tools and doesn’t include open source project management tools that mixes for instance Scrum and Kanban techniques, neither tools that are mere task managers.
Agile approaches like Scrum recommend a “just enough” attitude in software development and this is also the case when you discuss tools. Ideally, you would work with a small team that is collocated, but this is not always possible and you might be running your project virtually with a distributed Scrum team scattered around the world. If you don’t want to start using a sophisticated tool to manage your efforts, you might be interested in adopting some web tools that will fit your particular need to share some project information or status among all the team members. This article presents some online tools that are based on Scrum and Agile approaches, that implement specific Agile practices (backlog management, burndown chart) and that are freely available (no commercial/paid version!) on the web for distributed Scrum teams. Retrospective tools are not mentioned in this article, as we wrote a specific article about free retrospective tools for distributed scrum teams. The open source Scrum planning poker tools have been listed in a separate article like Open Source Planning Poker Tools. We will not present in this page the free option offered by commercial Scrum tools vendors, neither some free offer from tools that are still in their beta stage. You will find only Agile tools with no commercial option that are completely free (and supposed to stay so forever). If you want to add a free online Scrum tool to this page, just let us know using the comment form or the contact [...]

Bugzilla is a popular open source bug tracker created originally by the Mozilla Foundation. It has an open architecture that allows extending its basic functionalities. This article lists the Bugzilla plugins, called add-on in Bugzilla, that allows integrating an Agile project management approach like Scrum or Kanban around the bug tracking features of Bugzilla. There are currently few open source plugins that allow to add Scrum and Kanban features so that you can integrate an Agile project management approach with the basic functionalities of the Bugzilla open source bug tracking tool. Besides these open source extensions, there are also many commercial agile project management tools that have a connection with Bugzilla. The official page for the Bugzilla add-on is https://wiki.mozilla.org/Bugzilla:Addons Updated July 21 2025 AgileTools Bugzilla Extension The AgileTools Bugzilla Extension provides tools to manage teams and their processes. It currently supports the Scrum approach and provides planning and progress tracking tools for teams using Scrum. In the future other process models, for example Kanban, could be added.
technical debt

Technical debt is a metaphor coined by Ward Cunningham in 1992. This concept refers to the work that needs to be done so that a software development project could be considered as “complete”. Could you try to measure your amount of technical debt? Could you use some tools to do this? These are some of the questions that this article explores. In a brief informal survey of Agile practitioners, the idea of putting some number on the amount of technical debt was mostly considered as strange. Somebody even answered that if you had a good definition of “done”, your project should never create any technical debt. For those who live in a less perfect world, technical debt could be created in all the software development activities: architecture, design, coding, testing and configuration management. You don’t have to be an evil programmer to create some debt, especially in large projects. You just duplicate some code because you don’t know that the same feature is also implemented elsewhere in the system. You rely mostly on manual testing to verify an urgent change needed for a bug in production. Sometimes, it is the requirements or the concept that changes. Then you should refactor some to make variables names more meaningful. Tools to detect some of the technical debt issues have existed for a long time. There are plenty of them available for code analysis or test coverage. Some might provide “absolute” information, like the violation of a coding standard. Others will just produce [...]

In the context of software development, Kanban is an approach based on Lean that tries to limit waste and work in progress to the actual capacity of the software development team. The aim of Kanban is to create a context that balances capacity and demand through a value stream and promote visual project management. Thus the work is not “pushed” to developers by project managers, but “pulled” by the development team according to priorities. Kanban is the Japanese word for visual card and visualizing the current situation is very important in Kanban. If collocated teams can use simple dashboards and cards to track the work in progress, this is not the same for large or distributed Kanban teams that need to use software tools. As for Scrum, companies have developed software tools to help Agile teams manage their Kanban flows. This article presents a list of “pure” online commercial Kanban tools that can be used for free, even if there are often limitations, mainly the number of users, regarding this free usage. The free options should also be obvious in the tool’s pricing section and not hidden somewhere. The free usage is not just a free trial during a limited time. We also tried to select tool that integrate some of the actual Kanban concepts like WIP or swimlanes and not tools where you can just “move cards on a board” in a Trello-like style, even if you might certainly find value in these tools for simple visual project management, [...]
