The notion of coaching is specific to Agile approaches in the software development world. There has always been consultants, but they were seen as a different role. Here are some resources about Agile coaching, starting with some quotes from the Agile Coaching book written by Rachel Davies and Liz Sedley. “Agile is all about teams working together to produce great software. As an Agile coach, you can help your team go from first steps to running with Agile to unleashing their full Agile potential.” “The art of Agile coaching is understanding the situation, the values underlying Agile software development, and how the two can combine. As an Agile coach, you don’t need to have all the answers; it takes time and a few experiments to hit on the right approach. We’ve worked with teams who’ve come up with great solutions, and we learn from every team we work with.” “Don’t expect to get recognition for your work as an Agile coach. It’s a supporting role rather than one that delivers direct benefits. A good coach gives credit to the team. When you work on an idea with Frank, it’s Frank’s idea if it succeeds, and if it doesn’t, then commiserate together.” Source: “Agile Coaching”, Rachel Davies and Liz Sedley, Pragmatic Bookshelf, 250 pages Some good points to keep in mind the next time you will be looking for some coaching help to transition to Agile.
The title of the book “A Coach’s Guide to Training Scrum” is a form of understatement. If it actually provides some guidance about training people to Scrum, this book contains actually a complete step-by-step course to teach Scrum that an Agile coach could use “as is”. The initial chapter discusses the training approach used for the course and provides some considerations on how to perform a training course. The following chapters cover Scrum topics (product backlog, backlog grooming, etc…) with a training plan, slides used for the topic, workbook pages and exercises used for the topic. One of the strong points of the book is the material contained in the associated website where you can download training plans, quiz questions, feedback forms and other templates. I naturally recommend this book to every Agile coach that is responsible to train people about Scrum and Agile in their organizations, but I think that the material and the concepts presented in this book and its companion website will be very useful to anyone who has to train, manage and improve a software development project team, whether you follow a Scrum approach or a more traditional project management approach. Reference: “Growing Agile: A Coach’s Guide to Training Scrum”, Karen Greaves and Samantha Laing, https://leanpub.com/TrainingScrum, Associated website: https://www.growingagile.co/books/ Quotes Part of the ScrumMaster role is to ensure that everyone in their organisation is educated about Scrum. Over the last few years we have come across many ScrumMasters who have great intentions of running training.
So how to become a self-aware jack-of-all-trades in agility? Is there such a thing as Full Stack Agile Coach? If yes, how to become one? We love methods, frameworks and tools. All these fancy abbreviations, titles, or at least certificates make our inner impostors go to sleep for a while. We master at X, we mature at Y, etc. Isn’t that tricky? Does it actually make us professional… fools? Even worse. Doesn’t it make us harmful to our employers? Yes, harmful. We reorganize and often superficially optimize organizations around us to match what we know. Not to what they need, but what we have to offer. Let’s talk about expanding our toolkit to the very basic, but still wider than one tool. Scrum, Kanban, scaling patterns, theories, maturity model, strategy tools, the language, and presentation skills, and finally being a human being capable of understanding our fears, motivations, and irrationality. You are going to hear about Scrum, Kanban, organizational maturity model, Theory of Constraints, OKRs, Tribalism, Behavioral Economics, and many more. It is going to awake our internal Impostors, but that’s good. We make so much money that we need to improve. https://vimeo.com/732381739 Video producer: https://aceconf.com/

There was a time when software developers worked with consultants that will do things for their company or teach some technical knowledge. Agile approaches have brought forward another type of people: coaches. According to Rachel Davies and Liz Sedley in their book “Agile Coaching”, a coach doesn’t tell you what to do, rather she shows you how she thinks you might do things and hope that it will help you to improve your situation. She leads by example. It is not easy to write a book on this type of topic. The authors recognize this situation and manage to achieve a good balance between general advice and practical usage reports. The first part of the book is concentrated on the basics of coaching and communicating in software development projects. The software development curricula are often weak on “people” skills and you are not always lucky to find the right person as a supervisor when you get out of school. The second part goes through the different activities of a typical Agile project (daily meeting, user stories definition, planning, etc.) and discuss how coach can help a project team to achieve its goals. Each chapter has a final checklist and the book is also full of “personal stories” from the authors that enhance the theoretical advice, applying Agile coaching to real situations. Although the title of the book and some of its content might make you think that its value is limited to an agile context, I will recommend the book [...]

If today many people equal Agile with Scrum, the Agile approach is also deeply rooted in software engineering practices, like pair programming or refactoring, promoted by the eXtreme Programming (XP) movement. In this book, Emily Bache presents the Samman Technical Coaching approach. It is a method for helping software development teams to become more agile and raise the quality of their work. As Emily Bache writes it “Software development these days is a team sport and it doesn’t work to only train individuals”. You need to develop collaborative teams and “Samman” is a Swedish word that means “together”. The approach promoted by this book is based on the Mob Programming approach proposed by Woody Zuill. The book describes the two main “tools” of Samman Technical Coaching: ensemble working and learning hours with examples. A section is also dedicated to pitching the idea of Agile technical coaching to organizations and how to start doing it. The book is largely based on the Agile coaching experience of Emily Bache and contains many real-life situations and dialogues. It is easy to read and well-structured. I will recommend it not only to Agile coaches, but to every member of an Agile team that is interested in practical approaches for technical improvement and collaborative working.
